Gauteng principal fired after school bought KFC, other items with vouchers meant for books | News24

A Gauteng principal was fired after the education department found that vouchers issued to the school to buy pupils’ books and a photocopying machine were used by staff and governing body members to buy clothing, groceries, camping chairs and even KFC.

Catherine Nyirenda, the headmistress of Kwanele Primary School in Katlehong, on Gauteng’s East Rand, lost her bid for reinstatement with the Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC) on 26 June after it agreed with the sanction of dismissal.

She lodged an unfair dismissal dispute with the ELRC, following her dismissal by the Gauteng Education Department, after it found her guilty of financial misconduct.
