Gauteng’s crumbling infrastructure, especially roads, electricity, and water systems, dominated the proposals from candidates vying to become the province’s next premier. Representatives from the Democratic Alliance (DA), ActionSA, Rise Mzansi, and Build One South Africa all expressed a consensus on the urgent need to repair and invest in infrastructure to foster investment, job creation, and improved quality of life. They attributed the neglect to previous administrations led by the ANC, resulting in unreliable utilities and services.
During a debate organized by the Daily Maverick, DA’s Solly Msimanga highlighted a R500 billion backlog in infrastructure investment, emphasizing that fixing existing infrastructure and making new investments would stabilize water and electricity supplies, retain jobs, and attract private sector investment. ActionSA’s Reuben Masango echoed these views, advocating for infrastructure investment in human settlements and the conversion of derelict buildings into affordable housing, further creating artisan jobs.
Both Rise Mzansi and Build One South Africa stressed the need to revive sectors like manufacturing and improve the township economy to address high unemployment rates, which stand at 33.8%. They proposed tax incentives and financing to stimulate businesses in special economic zones. The debate underscored the candidates’ strategies, including the reduction of bureaucratic hurdles, engaging the private sector, and tackling corruption. Voters and attendees expressed optimism about the candidates’ plans, signaling a potential shift towards more competent local governance.
