Gauteng police analyze footage of a group ‘storming’ the IEC warehouse | News24

Gauteng authorities are scrutinizing footage of a group reportedly storming an IEC storage warehouse in Booysens. Insiders indicate some individuals wore MK Party attire. While the MK Party acknowledged its members’ presence, it denied any disorder. Police have opened a harassment case following the group’s demands to access the site where ballot papers are stored.

National Police spokesperson Brigadier General Athlenda Mathe confirmed ongoing investigations and noted no theft occurred. The IEC also verified the incident, explaining that they typically increase storage locations ahead of elections to ensure proximity to usage points. The material is then transported to a centralized facility.

According to the IEC, during the transfer of materials from a local warehouse in Johannesburg to the provincial warehouse, a group attempted to forcibly enter the site but failed to take anything. Police insiders suggested some participants wore MKP regalia.

MKP spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela remarked that party members followed a van transporting ballots and alerted the police upon arrival at Booysens, finding the IEC transferring ballot boxes between warehouses. Ndhlela emphasized there was no unauthorized storming, and cooperation ensued once police arrived. The footage remains under review to identify those involved.
