Free State Hawks bust illegal dealers with uncut diamonds | News24

Three men, accused of illegal diamond trading, are set to appear before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 7 June. Their arrests occurred on Wednesday, 5 June, following a coordinated operation by the Hawks in Welkom and the police Crime Intelligence unit. Colonel Zweli Mohobeleli, spokesperson for the Hawks, reported that the suspects, aged between 40 and 55, were apprehended with six uncut diamonds in their possession. These diamonds are pending evaluation to determine their worth. Initially, the suspects are charged with violating the Diamonds Act 56 of 1986. Mohobeleli detailed that the operation took place at Goldfields Mall in Welkom, based on intelligence about potential diamond smuggling activities involving the suspects. The Hawks, supported by Crime Intelligence, acted on this information, resulting in the arrests. The trio was reportedly using a Mercedes-Benz at the time of their detention.
