‘Fake’ doctor arrested in Gauteng hospital | News24

A woman has been arrested at Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital for allegedly posing as a doctor. The Gauteng Ministry of Health reported the arrest occurred on Tuesday evening. The suspect was handed over to the police and spent the night in custody. Facility management has opened a case at Rabasotho Police Station, and she is expected to appear in court soon.

The provincial health department emphasized the dangers posed by unqualified individuals masquerading as medical professionals, citing the risk they present to innocent lives. Department spokesperson Motalatale Modiba stressed that impersonating a healthcare worker and practicing without registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa is a criminal offense.

An investigation by both the hospital management and the police is underway to understand how the impostor gained access to the hospital. The department continues to enhance security measures to ensure the safety and well-being of patients and staff. The public and employees are urged to remain vigilant against such fraudulent activities.

This arrest follows a similar case last year involving a Gauteng TikToker, Matthew Lani, who was accused of posing as a doctor and stealing the identity of a legitimate medical intern. Despite initial detainment, Lani was released due to insufficient evidence.
