Engineering News – MTN achieves 98% network availability in Limpopo Province

MTN South Africa has reached a milestone in its national modernization program, achieving an unprecedented 98.33% network availability daily in Limpopo. The 2024 Resilience Plan, finalized in early 2023, focuses on ensuring backup power at key sites to reduce network disruptions during power issues. MTN’s efforts in Limpopo and across South Africa have enhanced data services, reduced drop-call rates, and bolstered network availability, as noted by acting regional GM Isaac Monama.

In 2023, MTN allocated R10.1 billion for network capacity and power grid resilience, with over R2.6 billion earmarked for energy and security improvements, essential amid a year marked by 335 days of loadshedding. By year-end, network availability improved to 95%, surpassing the company’s schedule. Sites with completed resiliency investments showcased over 98% availability. The next goal is to achieve 96% availability under Stage 6 loadshedding by the end of 2024. Additionally, MTN aims to expand 5G coverage, with 56 new sites launched in Limpopo and 60 more planned for 2024, striving for 95% nationwide broadband coverage by 2025.
