Eastern Cape mess: do political parties have solutions?

Thirty years post-apartheid, many Eastern Cape voters still endure dire healthcare conditions. Despite upcoming elections, political parties foresee little change. Spotlight queried six parties on their healthcare plans for the province, receiving responses from DA, ActionSA, and EFF. There’s skepticism about displacing the ANC, which dominated the 2019 elections.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) remain troubled, with only 249 operational ambulances due to poor roads, crime, and funding shortages. ActionSA’s Athol Trollip highlights the safety of ambulance crews in crime zones, while EFF’s Simthembile Madikizela points to inadequate roads hampering service. DA’s Jane Cowley suggests outsourcing repairs to improve ambulance availability.

Medico-legal claims exacerbate financial strains, often linked to birth complications and poor service. Cowley emphasizes hiring qualified healthcare professionals, rejecting politically motivated appointments. Broader issues also include non-critical spending and the need for better recruitment in rural areas. Solutions include targeted hiring practices, infrastructure management shifts, and leadership with healthcare expertise.
