Call for relocation of residents living in flood zones

In Nelson Mandela Bay, council members highlighted the urgent need for proactive measures to relocate residents from flood-prone areas to safer locations. Following heavy rains in June that caused significant damage and loss of life, questions arose about the city’s preparedness in identifying and utilizing safer land for settlements. Officials quickly identified land for relocating flood victims, but many had lived on dangerous flood lines for years. The committee admitted responsibility for the disaster in Kariega and committed to preventing future tragedies.

DA councilor Mxolisi Breakfast emphasized releasing land for mass social housing to tackle the housing shortage, currently between 90,000 and 100,000. He suggested involving the private sector to meet the demands of those ineligible for government-funded housing. The political head of human settlements, Thembinkosi Mafaya, stressed the need for all relevant officials to expedite land identification and relocation processes despite shrinking housing budgets. This collaborative effort aims to move people to safer, serviced sites.
