The Simon Mabhundu Sabela KZN Film and Television Awards removed the late actor Mpho Sebeng from the Best Actor nomination list due to his non-residency in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). Sebeng, who passed away in May 2024, was initially nominated alongside Kwenzo Ngcobo, Masoja Msiza, and Siyabonga Shibe. The awards, which aim to honor KZN talents, faced backlash for this decision, as many saw it as adding insult to injury following his untimely death. Ayanda Mthiyane, PR manager for the awards, clarified that although Sebeng’s nomination was an oversight, the remaining nominees are still highly deserving. The Sebeng family chose not to comment on the situation. Additionally, actress Natasha Thahane drew criticism for allegedly using Sebeng’s death for personal gain, further fueling controversy around this tragic incident.
