ANC in Limpopo defends having MECs linked to VBS Bank heist in provincial Cabinet

JOHANNESBURG – The African National Congress (ANC) in Limpopo has defended the provincial Cabinet, which has two MECs linked to the VBS Bank heist and one disgraced former director-general.

Limpopo is one of five provinces in the ANC that won an outright majority in the recent general elections.

However, opposition parties have started asking questions over the composition of the new Cabinet.

As mayors of the Vhembe District and Lepelle-Nkumpi Municipalities, MECs Florence Radzilani and Nakedi Kekana oversaw hundreds of millions of rands of public money being invested into the now-defunct VBS Mutual Bank.

In 2021, Limpopo’s newly appointed Finance MEC, Kgabo Mahoai, was fired from the International Relations Department for buying non-existent land in New York.

Asked about how this aligns with the ANC’s renewal agenda, ANC provincial spokesperson, Jimmy Machaka, said that all three individuals had never been found guilty in a court of law.

“The Cabinet of Limpopo is a combination of the new and old. You are having the MEC of health, who is new and does not have any clouds hanging over her head.”

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance in Limpopo said the trio was compromised and should not be anywhere near the public purse.
