ANC Gauteng says it is going back to the drawing board for further steps on coalitions

The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng acknowledged the need to reevaluate its strategy after the latest vote counts, hinting at potential collaborations with other political parties. Since 1994, the ANC has dominated Gauteng but now faces a coalition government scenario, particularly in Ekurhuleni after the 2021 local elections. Current data indicates the ANC holds 33.62% influence in the province, slightly ahead of the Democratic Alliance (DA) by 5%.

Despite its long-standing majority, the ANC is struggling to maintain control amid corruption allegations. This predicament is pushing the party to reconsider its stance on coalitions despite previously resisting them. Outgoing Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi, recently criticized coalition governments, citing inefficiencies and unclear reporting lines, referencing the Iranian government as an example. His perspective, however, contrasts with that of Lebogang Maile, the Human Settlements MEC, who advocates for practical political alliances. Maile emphasized a pragmatic approach, distancing himself from the emotional and irrational decisions attributed to ActionSA’s leader. This divergence within ANC ranks highlights the party’s internal debates as it grapples with shifting political dynamics in South Africa’s most populous province.
