Al Jama-ah member of Western Cape legislature reprimanded and forced to apologize after praying for victory in ANC elections

Galil Brinkhuis, a Western Cape legislator from Al Jama-ah, faced reprimand and was forced to apologize for siding with the ANC on a proposed energy law and praying for their election victory, against his party’s stance. During a committee deliberation on the Upstream Petroleum Resource Development Bill, aimed at separating provisions for petroleum and minerals and promoting industry transformation, Brinkhuis unexpectedly supported the bill and the ANC, urging divine intervention for their electoral success.

Al Jama-ah leader Ganief Hendricks clarified that Brinkhuis acted without authorization and reiterated the party’s fundamental policy differences with the ANC, particularly on corruption and justice issues. Despite historical cooperation with the ANC, Hendricks emphasized the party’s commitment to its core principles and called on Brinkhuis to explain his actions. The ANC, through spokesperson Khalid Sayed, affirmed their respect for Al Jama-ah’s internal matters while noting their shared aim to oust the DA in the Western Cape.
