’51 Gauteng officers arrested in 100 days’ – Commissioner Mthombeni

JOHANNESBURG – Gauteng’s new police commissioner, Tommy Mthombeni, has been in office for just over a hundred days. Despite a spike in violent crime, Mthombeni asserts that the police are making significant strides in their efforts to combat criminal activity in the province.

Since Mthombeni took the helm, at least 51 police officers have been arrested on a spectrum of serious charges, including corruption, rape, and murder. This crackdown is part of the commissioner’s broader strategy to clean up the force and restore public trust.

In an interview with our reporter Pule Letshwiti-Jones, Mthombeni expressed a resolute commitment to rooting out corruption within the ranks and improving overall police conduct. He acknowledged the challenges posed by the rise in violent crimes but emphasized that the recent arrests highlight the department’s resolve to address internal issues while tackling external crime.

Mthombeni’s short tenure has already seen decisive actions that signal a new direction for Gauteng’s police force. As his administration continues to prioritize accountability and transparency, the commissioner remains optimistic about the future, underscoring the importance of community cooperation in the ongoing fight against crime.
