Lifesaving in the Western Cape is getting a competitive boost thanks to the Lifesaving Western Cape Rescue Sport Series; a competitive initiative that hopes to recruit more lifeguards and enhance community safety!
Cape Town, South Africa (13 November 2024) — The Lifesaving Western Cape Rescue Sport Series is gearing up for a transformative impact on both lifesaving and community safety!
Through the competitive nature of the initiative, Lifesaving Western Cape hopes to recruit 200 new lifeguards by 2027 while enhance the presence of trained professionals across local beaches and pools.
Launching this month, the Rescue Sport Series initiative is focusing on the development of competitive excellence in lifesaving sports while fostering a deeper commitment to community service.
Putting in the Hours for Community Safety
With the goal of contributing over 10,000 volunteer hours to local beaches, the series will play a vital role in strengthening lifeguard services, ultimately improving public safety and preventing drowning incidents across the Western Cape.
Prizes and Champions
The Rescue Sport Series will crown overall champions across 11 lifesaving disciplines, from under 15 to Open categories, culminating in a sports awards evening in May 2025. Notably, the series also introduces several community recognition awards, highlighting exceptional officials, sportsmanship, and club growth.
As for prizes, the series will feature over R150,000 in cash prizes each season, offering a compelling incentive to both senior and U19 lifeguards to take part.
More Skilled Lifeguards to Look Forward to
“Through this series, we are not only growing the sport of lifesaving but also creating a pipeline of skilled lifeguards who are crucial in safeguarding our beaches,” shares Christine Kennedy, Chairlady of Lifesaving Western Cape.
“The Rescue Sport Series provides an exciting platform for athletes to challenge themselves in multiple disciplines, while making a real impact on the safety of our communities.”
A Boost for Recruitment
In addition to fostering athlete development, the series is a key initiative to strengthen lifeguard recruitment. Through ongoing opportunities for local businesses to get involved, Lifesaving Western Cape is looking to expand the series’ reach and impact. Sponsors will have the opportunity to gain visibility and align themselves with a cause that contributes directly to the safety and well-being of the community.
Who Can Compete?
The competition is open to local, provincial, and international lifeguards and spans multiple disciplines including beach sprints, board and surf ski races, and rescue events, with both individual and team challenges.
Events will take place from November 2024 to April 2025, with further competitions planned for the following seasons.

- WC Pool Champs, Bellville Pool – 25 Jan 2025
- Clifton 4th Beach – 8 Feb 2025
- WC Surf Champs, Strand Beach – 15-16 Mar 2025
- UWC Pool – 12 Apr 2025
- Rescue Sports Awards – May 2025
